Square steel bar class 42CrMo4

Our company, H Metal, distributes square steel bar class 42CrMo4. It is an alloy steel, hardened by alloying with chromium-molybdenum.

Abbreviations:

• +AR – As Rolled, only rolled, without any additional improvement;
• +QT – Modified by heat treatment;
• +C – Calibrated;
• +SH – Peeled.

Chemical composition of 42CrMo4 steel

C % 0.38 – 0.45;

Si % max 0.40;

Mn % 0.60 – 0.90;

P % max 0.025;

S % max 0.035;

Cr % 0.90 – 1.20;

Mo % 0.15 – 0.30.

Uses of square steel bar class 42CrMo

This steel grade is successfully used in the machine-building industry:

– manufacturing of high-strength parts for compressors, turbines;

– working elements of heavy surface and underground machinery;

– parts of agricultural machinery.

Welding

42CrMo4 class steel has reduced weldability due to its high sensitivity to cracking.

If the welding process is required, it is recommended to preheat the metal surface to a temperature of 200 – 300°C. This temperature should not be exceeded, as there is a risk of damaging the chromium layer. After the welding operation is finished, cooling should take place under supervision, as slowly as possible, to avoid the appearance of cracks in the material.

Corrosion

The square steel profile made of 42CrMo4 has poor corrosion resistance and will eventually rust if not treated properly. It will be given an anti-corrosion treatment, depending on the final use.

• Surface appearance of square steel: according to EN 10221/96, class A/B;

• Dimensional and shape tolerances: according to EN 10060;
• Inspection certificate issued by the manufacturer: type 3.1 according to EN 10204.
