Extra-thick steel pipes for ship launching systems

H Metal has delivered extra-thick steel pipes that have been used for ship launching systems to shipyards and port infrastructures in Braila, Galati and Tulcea.

Delivered dimensions:

390 x 50 mm, S355J2H steel quality.

244.5 x 20 mm, steel grade S355J2.

Technical specifications:

S355J2H – structural steel for welded pipes with excellent strength and toughness characteristics, frequently used in demanding applications.

S355J2 – structural steel with high mechanical properties, suitable for massive components and dynamic loads.

WHY ARE EXTRA-THICK STEEL PIPES Ø 390×50 MM AND Ø 244×20 MM USED IN SUCH SYSTEMS?

They have a resistance to very high loads (the ship can weigh thousands of tons).

Axial rigidity: important in structures where precision and stability are required.

Support for bearings, rollers or guides that slide with the ship.

Hydraulic cylinder components used on launch pads.

High mechanical strength

The wall thickness (50 mm and 20 mm) gives exceptional durability to high pressures, shocks and vibrations. Essential features in ship-mounted water launcher systems, where the forces involved can be considerable.

Steel is able to withstand dynamic loads and extreme operating conditions.

The high thickness allows precise turning, boring and grinding, adapting the pipes to exact requirements (e.g. sealing surfaces, special inner profiles, etc.).

The naval industry has special, very strict requirements for several reasons: operational safety, extreme environmental conditions and the structural responsibility of each component.

Steels such as S355J2 and S355J2H are often used because they offer good tensile and impact resistance, including at low temperatures (down to -20°C).

Components (such as machined pipes) must adhere to exact tolerances to fit perfectly into structural or hydraulic systems used in the marine industry.

Most naval structures are welded, so the materials must be easy to weld without the appearance of defects (cracks, porosities). S355J2 steel is excellent from this point of view.
