Airport signage: painting in two colors on the same surface

The technical challenge of the airport signage project

For this project, the technical requirements imposed exact dimensions and correct delimitations between the colors applied on each piece.

The main requirements of the project are:

– elements made of galvanized sheet, with a length of 1900 mm for each individual piece;

– alternation of colored areas carried out at constant intervals of 200 mm along the entire length of the pieces;

– ends finished in red, applied over an exact length of 50 mm;

– clear delimitation between colors, without overlaps or visible deviations on the metal surface of the pieces;

– maintaining dimensions and proportions along the entire length of the piece, without differences between elements.

Checks and control during the work

During production, constant checks were carried out to maintain the correctness of each work stage.

Each piece was individually checked to comply with the requirements established by the technical project.

Repeated measurements were necessary to avoid deviations in the production process.

The coordination of the work stages ensured the maintenance of a correct production flow.

Technological process for airport signage: isolation technique and double curing

The execution of the elements for airport signage was carried out in successive stages, respecting the working order established in production.

Preparation of the base material

We cut the 0.50 mm galvanized sheet to the dimensions of 200 x 1900 mm. Each strip of sheet was provided with technical holes for fastening on the hooks of the painting line.

Application of the base color

The base coat, white color, was applied on the entire surface of each produced element.

The pieces were introduced into the oven for complete polymerization of the initially applied paint layer.

Manual isolation – masking the areas that remain white

After cooling, the necessary areas were manually isolated, according to the dimensions and segmentations specified in the project.

The masking process was carried out carefully to ensure correct delimitation between the two applied colors.

Obtaining the contrast

The red color was applied on the areas left uncovered after completing the manual isolation stage.

The pieces were reintroduced into the oven for the final fixing of the applied paint layer.

Yes. Although the process is labor-intensive and involves additional manual work for masking and multiple passes through the oven, we can achieve complex color combinations according to project specifications.

In the case of this project of 250 pieces, the term was approximately 15 working days. This timeframe covered the entire flow: cutting, drilling and the special double painting process.

Oven polymerization creates a superior molecular adhesion compared to traditional painting. It is essential for elements exposed to wind, UV radiation and chemical agents (such as de-icing agents on airports).
